Historic, untouched, preserved.
Where small streams become wide rivers, the landscape rises gently undulating up to its highest peak in the north and nature creates its own original forms in a national park, we would like to welcome you. The Harz Mountains are Germany's northernmost low mountain range and are richer in natural beauty and historical culture than almost any other region in such a small area. Only 110 kilometers long and 30 to 40 kilometers wide, it covers an area of 2,226 km². The Harz forms an intersection between Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Lower Saxony and is an important part of German history. Germany was divided here until 1989. But that's not all - three World Heritage Sites await you here.
The most popular excursion destinations include the Brocken with the Harz narrow-gauge railroad, show mines and caves, monasteries, churches, castles and the historically significant towns of Quedlinburg, Goslar, Wernigerode and Halberstadt.
But it's not just nature, culture and biodiversity that characterize the Harz Mountains. Visitors are also attracted by the longest suspension bridge of its kind in the world (Titan RT), Skyrope and the Volksbank Mountain Bike Arena, as well as the numerous winter sports opportunities in the Upper Harz.
We invite you to explore this very special region. Let yourself be enchanted and use Wernigerode as the ideal starting point for your stay.

Wernigerode, the "colorful town on the Harz".
It owes its nickname to the poet Hermann Löns. Dedicated to him, there is a memorial worth seeing on a hill on the "Armeuteberg". The town belongs to the Harz district. With around 32,900 inhabitants, Wernigerode is the second largest town in the district after Halberstadt. According to historical records, the first settlement area was the "Klint", where Schnakenburg Castle was located. Wernigerode was first mentioned in a document in 1121 and was granted town charter in 1121, following the example of Goslar. The town's most important sights are Wernigerode Castle, the town hall on the historic market square, the "smallest house" and the "leaning house". Wernigerode has always enchanted its visitors with its beautiful half-timbered buildings in the town center and its very special ambience. Visit the town - it will remain a permanent fixture in your memory.
Quedlinburg - UNESCO World Heritage City.
Quedlinburg, the third largest town in the Harz region, is located on the northern edge of the Harz, close to the River Bode. It became world-famous when its historic town center was declared a World Heritage Site in 1994, making it the first of the three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Harz Mountains. Around 2000 half-timbered houses from eight centuries characterize the townscape. The collegiate church of St. Cyriakus and Quedlinburg Castle are the landmarks of the settlement, which was granted town charter in 994. Another attraction can be found directly in front of the Renaissance town hall: the Roland statue. We would also like to mention the Münzberg with the Romanesque monastery church of St. Marien. This town knows how to enchant its visitors in many different ways.
Goslar - A living world cultural heritage site in the Harz Mountains
Goslar is the capital of the district of the same name in southern Lower Saxony. With over 51,000 inhabitants, it is the largest town on the edge of the Harz Mountains. Goslar's old town and the Rammelsberg ore mine on the southern edge have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. The town center with the town hall, the Kaiserworth and Kaiserpfalz as well as the varied half-timbered houses are appreciated and explored by thousands of visitors every year. The Goslar Christmas market with its numerous exhibitors and its route through the entire old town area conveys a special flair during the Advent season. It is one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in the north. Look forward to unforgettable impressions of the imperial city during a visit.
